Hi.
I've been asked to start getting rid of all of are cd's and put them onto harddrives due to space problems.
Basicly, what i wanna do is have a old computer in place of the hifi, up the ram to a gig and slave a 160 gb drive in there for storage and add things like wifi bluetooth and tv.
The problem is, we're not throughing lodes of money at this setup, so we want to try and use stuff that we have as we are allready going to have to get a few new computer bits.
The current setup has some nice 5.1 speakers connected to it, so i figgered that it'd make sence if these were kept and were used in conjunction with the computer.
Now heres the problem...
On looking around the back of the hifi (really need to tidy up some cables there), i can't see any any plugs that would fit into a standard line out port on a soundcard.
There all strange, some of them look like small ide kables.
Can someone a bit more techy than me tell me if i'm missing something or if not, is there some converter that i can get (that i can put into pci) that will let me use these?
Thanks for any ideas,
BEN.
Ben, radio shak is your friend. you can probably get just about any type of convertion plug you need. The problem is going to be that I doubt your computer is powerfull enough to power the speakers unless the speakers are powered them selves. ou would need some type of amplifire where you would fee the computer audio in to it and the speakers would be connected to the amp being powered by them. How about considering keeping your receiver and pluging the computer in to one of the auxiliary inputs? Since the speakers were already attached to the receiver you know it is powerfull enough for them.
Yes the poster before me has the idea. You'll simply need to get a stereo Y. plug that has a 1.8 inch stereo male plug on the end that goes into the computer and has 2 femaile RCA jacks on the other end. Tell the tech and the store what you have in mind and if possible take the cables that connect to your amp with you. These would be the ones that feel like a plug with a basket around it.
Now all I've written assumes you are connecting the comp to an amplifier that powers the speakers. Do clean up back there. It will be less messy to find things and will help your sound quality believe it or not. If your cables are old get shielded cables.
Good listening.
